Strawberry squids live in the twilight zone of the ocean (200m-1000m deep). They are about the size of a football, with the largest mantle recorded at 29 cm. This puts the Strawberry Squid on the smaller end of the squid size spectrum, considering that the giant squid could be the size of a school bus. Their body is covered in little orbs of light, called photophores. These are light emmiting organs, found on animals who live in the depths of the ocean. They allow them to lure in prey, attract a mate, communicate and hide from predators.
